Unité d'Habitation

The film was shot in the grounds of the one of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation that was built in Berlin in 1959. Literally meaning "Housing Union" or "Housing Unit" the Unité project sought to create housing to alleviate the post-war housing shortage but also incorporated Le Corbursier's vision for communal living by housing all the amenities needed for life in these 'vertical villages'. The design of the building is typical with its striking angular lines and bold facade. The film draws on the contrast between this aspiring architectural style and the humility of one resident who pauses for a moment to reflect on the world outside.

'...I have decided to make beauty by contrast. I will find its complement and establish a play between crudity and finesse, between the dull and the intense, between precision and accident. I will make people think and reflect, this is the reason for the violent, clamorous, triumphant polychrome of the facades.' (Le Corbusier)

Previous works have focused on subjects such as EU border fortification, migration for the purpose of work and social ideals and language by producing studies on locations such as the Bialowieza forest, a hunger strike protest by migrant workers in Barcelona, Spain and the headquarters of Esperanto in Poland amongst others.
